Revising and Proofreading

Paragraphs:

As a group, you will begin to construct paragraphs to organize your ideas, thoughts and views about the Global Issue you have been researching.  While your group is constructing these paragraphs, remember to refer to the success criteria created by the group for guidance.

Strikethrough:

This is an example of a paragraph we revised, edited and proofread as a class.  Use the strike through on words that are spelt incorrectly or that should be removed.

Underline:

Any words that are replacing incorrectly spelt words, be sure to type them right after the striken word and then underline the new word.  Any words or phrases that you believe best fits in getting the message across, type it in the appropriate place within the paragraph and underline the word or phrase.

MODELLED PARAGRAPH:

As a global community we need to be concerned about the way we use water, what we put into it and the over reliance on imports and exports of oil.  Our group used PEPS as a framework to analyze the issue of toxic waste and oil spills as a global issue.

Physical

The physical aspects of toxic waste and oil spills, includes its impact on natural resources, location, habitat and the environmental sustainability. Oil spills are made from liquid petroleum which are from large tankers and factories located around the world.  As a global community, we rely heavily on oil as an energy source; as a result, we import and export large quantities of oil across the ocean.  This increases the risks of accidents and oil spills.  Hundreds of millions of gallons end up in our oceans each year.  The BP oil spill caused damage to the marine and wildlife habitats in the Gulf of Mexico.  Oil spills can ruin life biodiversity and can cause changes irreversible change to the marine life in oceans and life on land.  In late November 2010, 11 000 square kilometres were reclosed to the shrimping industry since large tar balls were found in the shrimpers nets.

Oil spills cause birds to die because the oil sticks to their wings; therefore they are unable to survive.  To save the birds, people use biological agents like bacteria and micro-organisms which are released into the water to clean up the oil.  Living things would not be in danger if people did not rely on oil as a main source of energy.  There are alternative forms of renewable energy like wind and solar energy, which are environmentally safe.

The research we need:
- causes damage to marine and wildlife habitats
- the Gulf of Mexico fishing and tourism industry impacted
- In November 2010, 11 000 square kilometers reclosed to shrimping
- tar balls found on shrimpers nets

Our research has focussed on oil spills not toxic waste. I used strikeout to let us know that we need to do this in other parts of our writing.

Research how much oil was spilled into the Gulf of Mexico during the BP drilling oil spill.
