Gender Equality

Page history last edited by Bailey 12 years, 10 months ago

  1. As a group you will co-construct your leaning about your chosen Global topic.
  2. Over the next 5 days, you will research your topic in relation to PEPS and using the Success Criteria as a guide.
  3. All research will have to be sourced and put into jot notes.

1.  Physical-Physical Landscape of the Earth

(location, country size, time zone, natural resources, important physical landforms, climate)

- People make schools for boys in a differrent place than the girl's school's

- Women and young girls carry water from sources that are far away from their homes.

- That leaves no time for the girls to go to school, since they have to support their families in any way they can.

- For girls in some regions, education remains un-available

- Women and girls have to walk hours on rocks and other hard terrain to get water for their family.

- Women and girls need to travel FAR distances to get dirty water and have little to no time for school.

- In some south american, asian and african cultures, girls and women are expected to do all household chores cleaning and cooking and are not expected to work. So higher education is not an valued for girls and women.

- Canada's economy was built on natural resources like mining, forestry, fishing, and fur trading.  These were and are still jobs done by men and women were not able to work in these jobs which made them dependant on men.

2.  Economic- Forms of Trade, work or any money related activities

(currency, GDP, major exports and imports, literacy rate etc.)

- There are organizations around the world that are trying to empower women by helping them to market their trades around the world, to bring money into their community.

- In India, the women do embroidery and are selling it globally, instead of just in their local community.

- Women are paid less then men because their work is not valued the same as a man's

- For girls in some regions, education remains un-available

- Poverty is a major barrier to education

- Women are employed in more unstable that are more unreliable for steady income

-70% of people in poverty are women

- Education in many non-western countries are not government, and very expensive. Women's education is not a priority in these countries.

- In Canada, we still do not have pay equity for women, although women have been fighting for this since the late 70's.

- Women's salary is almost 70% less, than men's in Canada.

- Jobs that employ mostly women e.g. teaching, nusing, social work, child care, elder care and clerical are more often lower paying jobs, compared to "men's work". e.g. engineers, mechanics, science and technology, construction trades.

- More women are entering medical schools in Canada then ever before. e.g. in 2009, 43% of first year medical students at U of T were women. But compare this to 91% women in nursing.

-Top level jobs still go to men at an over whelming degree

3.  Political- Government Activities, laws, or any symbols related to these activities

(forms of government, capital city, political leaders)

 - Before and still in some countrys women are forbidden to vote

 - Women don't have as many opportunities to become political leaders

 - Women have little to no power in government

 - Women get no respect from the government

 - Women in some countries are not wanted as political leaders because of discrimination

 - In some developing countries, women's rights aren't as protected as much by the government

 - For the first time, women took an importent role in the demonstrations in Tehrir Square in Egypt that toppled the government.

- Canada has had one female prime minister even if it was for a short time. The USA has never had a female president. Both in Canada and in the USA, less then 25% politcal leaders are women.

- The Canadian Humans Rights Code and the Charter of Rights and Freedom say that women cannot be discriminated against based on gender.  But women are still discriminated against in sports, employment, housing.

4.  Social- People and the cultures, beliefs and traditions that define them

(languages, religion, celebrations, recreation, values, immigration, population etc.)

- Some schools are boy or girl only which forces gender inequality

- In the poorest communities around the world, women and girls are often the ones that have to collect water, firewood or other basic needs of life.  They walk on average 6 kilometres a day while carrying the equivalent of a suitcase. This leaves little time to go to school, access health care services or earn money to support their families.

- In Saudi Arabia many women are forbidden to drive cars, and even ride bikes.

- In Saudi Arabia, women can go to university, but only 1 in 10 can are able to find jobs.

- For girls in some regions, education remains un-available

- Poverty is a major barrier to education

- Women  are employed in more unstable jobs that are more unreliable for steady income

- Children are only allowed to be driven to places by men

- Women are not allowed to be driven by men that are related to them

- A women's expectations are lower than men in most countries around the world

- There are more women in poverty than men

- There are no female women players in the NHL. Even though Canada has the best female hockey team in the world. Winning both world cup gold medal, and olympic gold medal!

- In the english language, there are many gendered names for professions e.g. postman, ( mailman ) policeman, fireman, fisherman, maid ( which comes from the word maiden, which means single woman ).

Hey guys, I just posted more info on our page, but for some of the facts, I found that they went into more than one category. So if you see a fact twice, please don't delete it or anything. We really need to get more info for political, because we only have 2 facts, and I couldn't seem to find any facts that would fall under political. Any help??????????? :(

Everyone needs to continue to research and highlight in your own words the key ideas in jot notes from what you are reading (books or websites). Your research at this time should not include inferences. Use PEPS as a lense to guide you through your reading.
