  1. As a group you will co-construct your leaning about your chosen Global topic.
  2. Over the next 5 days, you will research your topic in relation to PEPS and using the Success Criteria as a guide.
  3. All research will have to be sourced and put into jot notes.

ABOUT CHILD LABOUR

ONE WORLD

1.  Physical-Physical Landscape of the Earth

(location, country size, time zone, natural resources, important physical landforms, climate)

- Child Labour is in many places such as India

- Working in farms, mines and construction sites

- Mines are rocky

- Fighting in wars

- Farms have a lot of grass

- Construction sites have many bad fumes for people's health

- Some jobs don't have a lot of water around the area so it is very dry

- Some jobs don't have many trees around it which doesn't give people in the area fresh air

- Construction Sites for example

- Children work in unclean enviroments

- At the construction sites, there are very little food and water

- There is only a little bit of light (causing it to be dark) in mines and children work in there when they are in child labour

- Children are opened to dangerous smoke throughout the day

- Children are also opened to dangerous charcoal throughout the day

- Children have to work in dangerous and often fatal conditions

- In coal mines, children have to crawl through small and narrow tunnels

2.  Economic- Forms of Trade, work or any money related activities

(currency, GDP, major exports and imports, literacy rate etc.)

- When a child is in child labour, you get very little money or no money at all

- When a child is a child solider, they don't give you any money

- The most fortunate child would get 3 cents for every kilogram of cotton he/she picks

- A kilogram of cotton is worth $1.15 on the world market

- Some stores still use child labour

- For example: Nike, Gap, Old Navy, Hollister, Abercrombie and Fitch and Banana Republic

- Many stores are starting to clean up their act and are not using child labour anymore

- With 760 dollars, it would take over a 20-year time period to end child labour

- A child is maybe FORCED into child labour because thier family has a dept they have to pay off

- They sell their child to get money to pay off the dept they have

- When going shopping, some clothes can be made from child labour so if you want to help prevent child labour, don't buy the shirt

- This will tell the owner to stop making this becuase no one is buying it so it will just be a waste

- Not only does children in child labour are child soilders but they also are payed to fight other people

- Families have to make sure that they have enough money which forces them to sell their kids

- Children who get an education are more likely to break out of the cycle of poverty

- This is because when they have an education, they can get a good job to earn money to support their families

- Cycle of poverty : If you don't get a good education, you won't get a job and if you don't get a job, you're children can't go to school because they have to help earn money for their family

3.  Political- Government Activities, laws, or any symbols related to these activities

(forms of government, capital city, political leaders)

- Millions of children will never go to school (getting an education is a law)

- Children have to go to work and are not able to go to school

- Children are in child labour because thier family is in poverty

- Now, many children are now starting to go to school

- Many children are now working with dangerous things

- Chemicals, working in mines

- Children in the worst conditions

- Children are using guns to kill other people

- Children leave armies physically and emotionally wounded

- Many children are scarred for life

- Children are selling things on the streets or working at someone's house

- We are in school getting an education and that is a law

- Children around the world just like us

- Buying or selling a person

- Children in child labour don't get proper care the way they should get it

- Many children are hurt in child labour

- Using dangerous things like knives and guns

- One in 8 children are in the worst form of child labour

- Some children are working in conditions that are illegal

- 218 million children around the ages of 5-17 are in child labour

- Children are being beaten up like Iqbal

- Child labour is harmful to a child's physical and mental growth

- There are laws in many countries that say no child labour but in some countries most people don't follow the laws

- There are laws but they are not being enforced

- It's estimated that 158 million children from the ages of 5 to 14 are in child labour

- Children in child labour work many hours a day

- In Canada employers must make speacial efforts to make sure the workplace is healthy and safe.

4.  Social- People and the cultures, beliefs and traditions that define them

(languages, religion, celebrations, recreation, values, immigration, population etc.)

- Many children don't have the right to speak

- There is an initaitive called the Vow of Silence

- This is when people go silent for the whole day to remeber all the child labourers in the world and feel what they feel everyday of their lives

- There are also people right in our community/city that are in poverty so we will be going silence for them too

- This year, our school community (McMurrich) will be taking the Vow on February 16th, 2011

- Some students will be taking the vow for the whole school day and other students will be doing it for 24 hours

- Customers around the world are not buying things that are made from children in child labour

- Tells the people at the factory that no one is buying more of these things that are made from child labour so we shouldn't make more

- Many people (as a community)  are trying to help stop child labour

- Some children are forced to work 18 hours a day

- Children in child labour don't go to school

- That means not communicating with their classmates ( they have no classmates since they don't go to school)

- Some children have to kill their friends because they are a child soldier

- You could spread the word to help STOP child labour  by doing little things like not buying clothes that are made from children in child labour

- As well, you can start a group with your friends and start makeing a difference in the world

- In McMurrich, we have a group/club called Be the Change (BTC)

- We meet together once a week and plan iniatives for the school (McMurrich) to raise awarness and/or money to donate to the Alternative Income Program

- The Alternative Income Program is very helpful because it helps stop many global issues like child labour

- It gives money to families so they have enough money to support their families so they don't have to sell thier child into child labour

- A boy name Iqbal was in child labour

- He and his friends believed that they could escape from child labour

5.  Interesting facts / Jobs that children in child labour do

- Child soldiers are injected with a drug called brown brown which is a mixture of heroin and gunpowder and it you makes you violent

- Children are makeing carpets ( like Iqbal )

- Children to the ages of 5 - 14 are harvesting cotton

- Children with plastic water bottles filled with pesticide spraying at the crops

- Many kids work in the wealthy houses as house keepers

- 36 countires use children as child soldiers

- Even now, many countries like Asia and Africa still use child labour

- The word "child labour" pretty much means someone taking away a child's privilages in life

- Sometimes, a child in child labour can learn a sense of responsibility

- Sometimes when the child doesn't do what the master say they would get beaten so hard.

- Child labour has decreased from 25 percent to 10 percent from 1960 to 2003

- Child labour mostly happens in developing continents like India or Africa

- Child labour happened mostly during the industrial revolution

- When starting a  group to help make a difference in the world, I always like to remember, " Together, we can make a change/difference in the world"

- Iqbal ( the person that inspired Craig and Marc Keilburger into making a difference in the world ) was in child labour

- He had to make carpets in a carpet factory and he had very little food to eat and little water to drink

-An estimated 158 million children aged 5-14 are engaged in child labour.

-Millions of children are engaged in hazardous situations like dangerous machinery and chemicals .

- Apparently in Sub-Saharan Africa around one in three children engaged in child labour , representing 69 million children.

- Some people are now building primary schools for the children to have a good education and to support there family.

- A website said :

"...to enable families living in poverty to survive, a quarter of a billion children aged 14 and under, both in and out of school, now work, often in hazardous or unhealthy conditions. ...Having approved the International Labour Organisation convention on the worst forms of child labour, Member States must now implement it fully.”

- Its's estimated that 246 million children around the world are in child labour

I think that this is REALLY sad. Whenever I find information about child labour, I think about the book Iqbal that Ms. Rambaran is reading to us. Can anyone else relate to this?

Clara said

at 7:32 pm on Feb 22, 2011

Did anyone have a chance to go on the wiki today or yesterday? Also, we need more information because Ms. Rambaran metioned today that none of wiki pages are at level four yet so lets try to make it that!! We can do this!! :D

Clara said

at 6:41 pm on Feb 23, 2011

Did anyone have a chance to go on the wiki today? Remember that we EACH have to put 2 more jot notes in each section. Then we can have 12 more jot notes in each section and I think that will help a lot becasue we need a lot of information for the back cover of our book.

Clara said

at 7:09 pm on Feb 23, 2011

Hey guys!! Just to let you know, if there is a piece of information that is in sociall for example and you think that it can go into political, you can put it in there becasue it is related. This is just like what Ms. Rambaran and Mrs. Taveres showed us today. :D

Clara said

at 7:19 pm on Feb 23, 2011

Hey guys!! I really need help for the physical section!! Help please!!

Clara said

Clara said

at 8:01 pm on Feb 23, 2011

Yes Yasmine, please feel free to add more information to any of the sections. We need more information to bump our wiki pages up to a level 4. Also, that would be easiar for us when we do our back covers for our book. :D

Yasmine said

at 8:05 pm on Feb 23, 2011

thats true lol (: -_ -:)

Yasmine said

at 8:11 pm on Feb 23, 2011

i cant find information on physical so im going to add on social okay

Clara said

at 8:20 pm on Feb 23, 2011

Yasmine, something you added in the physical section doesn't really relate to it, it relates more to econmics so I am going to move it there.

Clara said

at 8:22 pm on Feb 23, 2011

Also, Yasmine, I put your idea that was in physical in different words because it sort of didn't make sense. I just wanted to let you know. :D

Clara said

at 10:05 pm on Feb 23, 2011

Hey Tommy!! You added some GREAT information in the wiki page. I extended your thinking for what you put in socail about making a group to make a difference in the world. Great job!! :D
