Gender Equality - Draft

Page history last edited by Nina 13 years, 1 month ago

Opening Sentence:

In alot of countries around the world, there are many different types gender inequality. Gender inequality happens to men and women in the world because of discrimination.

Physical:

In some countries some western countries ,women and girls have no time to attend school because they need to support their families in any way they can (e.g. cleaning and getting water) while men and boys get to go to school and get jobs. For girls in some regions, education remains unavailable because sometimes schools are too far away from their homes, or the schools don't accept girls.

Women and young girls have to walk hours on rock and other hard harsh terrain to get dirty water for their families.  In some South American, Asian and African cultures, girls and women are expected to do all the household chores and are not expected to work. So higher education is not allowed for girls and women.Canada's economy was built on natural resources like mining, forestry, fishing, and fur trading.  These were and are still jobs done by men.  Women were not able to work in these jobs which made them dependant on men.

  Economic:

70% of people in poverty are women because a woman's work isn't as vauled as men's work.  There are many organizations around the world trying to empower women by helping them to market their trades around the world, to bring money into their communities.  For example, in India, some women do embroidery and are selling it globally instead of just their local communities. because in Canada we still don't pay equabialthough women have been fighting for this since the late 70's.  More women are entering medical school in canada then ever before e.g. in 2009 43% of first year medical students at U of T were women but compare this to 90% of women in nursing. Lastly a women's salary is 70% lower than a man's in Canada because women are employed in more unstable jobs that are more unreliable for steady income while men get better jobs at an over whelming degree.

Political:

Before and still in some countries women are forbidden to vote, which makes it hard for women to become political leaders.  Also, women have little to no power in government and have no respect from the government.  Women don't have as many opportunities to become political leaders.  In some places, like Saudi Arabia, women are not wanted as political leaders because of discrimination.  In some regions around the world, women's rights are not protected as much by the government as men's rights are.

Social:

In some regions girls can attend school and university, but only 1 in 10 of them can find jobs after that, because they are discriminated against from society.  In the poorest communities around the world, girls are often the ones that have to collect water, firewood, or other basic needs of life.  This leaves little time to go to school, access health care, or earn money to support their families.  In Saudi Arabia, women are forbidden to drive cars, or even ride bikes.  Also, women are not allowed to be driven to places by men who are related to them.
